I finally registered just to say: don't use carpet remnants. They hold sweat and smell terrible after a month. Stick to rubber or foam that you can actually clean.

I’ve built a few platforms for clients. The 'Sandwich' method is the king. Plywood + MLV + Rubber. It's about 2 inches thick total and stops almost all vibration.

Is MLV actually easy to cut? I'm not exactly a handyman.

Yeah, you just need a sharp utility knife and a straight edge. It's like cutting thick linoleum. Just watch your fingers!

Don't forget that sound also travels through the air, not just the floor. Heavy curtains or even acoustic panels on the walls can help stop the 'clink' of the plates from travelling.

Good point Droz. I noticed a big difference when I put some rugs on the walls. Looks a bit 'student flat' but it works.

If you're really on a budget, horse stall mats are still the best value. Just air them out in the garage or garden for a week before bringing them inside to get rid of the smell.

I did that with mine! My garden smelled like a Formula 1 pit lane for three days, but it worked fine after that.

Does the thickness of the mat affect the balance of the rack? I'm worried about the uprights sinking into soft foam.

Yes, John. Never put a rack directly on soft foam. It will wobble. Put the rack on the plywood layer or directly on high-density rubber.

To wrap it up for CaliCutter: 1. Check floor limits. 2. Crumb rubber > solid rubber. 3. Use an underlayment like MLV or Regupol for vibration. 4. Be smart about when you lift!

This is awesome advice. I think I'm going to try the MLV under some thick rubber tiles. Cheers everyone!
