I just finished my first full-body workout yesterday and I can barely walk down the stairs today. Is it normal to feel this much pain right away? I’m supposed to go back to the gym tomorrow but I feel like my legs are made of lead.

Welcome to the club, mate! That's classic DOMS (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness). It usually peaks around 24 to 48 hours after. Honestly, a light walk or some very gentle stretching helps more than just sitting on the sofa.

Totally normal. I remember my first week back last winter—I couldn't even lift my arms to put on my hockey jersey! Just make sure you're getting enough protein and staying hydrated.

Drink a ton of water. I also find that a hot bath with Epsom salts does wonders when the soreness is that deep in the legs.

Thanks guys. @LondonLad, you mentioned a walk—should I actually skip the gym tomorrow then? I don't want to lose momentum on day 2.

If it's just muscle soreness and not a sharp pain in the joints, I'd say go but keep it light. Maybe just do some incline walking or very light weights. Once the blood starts pumping, the stiffness usually eases up a bit.

I'm with @NorthernLass on this. Don't go for a personal best tomorrow. Think of it as "active recovery." If you're really struggling to move, there's no shame in taking one extra day, just don't let one day turn into a week!

I usually find the second day is actually worse than the first! Don't be surprised if you feel even tighter tomorrow morning. It’s a bit of a shock to the system when you’re starting out.

VancouverDave is right. Day 2 is the real test of your willpower lol.

Oh man, I was hoping you'd say it gets better tomorrow! I'll try the Epsom salt bath tonight and see how I feel in the morning.

How was the workout anyway? Did you go heavy on the squats? Usually, it's the eccentric part of the lift (the lowering phase) that causes the most DOMS.

Good point @MapleLeafFan. MidwestMike, maybe check your form next session? Sometimes extreme soreness comes from awkward movement patterns if you're not used to the lifts yet.

I did do squats! I think I might have pushed too hard trying to keep up with the guy next to me. Classic beginner mistake, I guess.

We've all been there. Ego lifting is the fastest way to a week of pain. Just stick to the program numbers next time!

Anyone tried tart cherry juice? I’ve heard some people in my running group swear by it for inflammation.

I've tried it. It's alright, but honestly, nothing beats sleep. Get a solid 8-9 hours tonight and your body will do most of the repair work then.

Quick update: Woke up, still sore but I managed a 20-minute walk. Heading to the gym now just to do some light mobility work and maybe some rowing. Thanks for the encouragement everyone!

That’s the spirit! Keep us posted on how the recovery goes. You'll find it happens much less frequently once your body adapts to the routine.
