Are EAAs Good for Energy During Workouts or Just for Recovery?

Hey everyone, I've been using EAAs (Essential Amino Acids) mostly for post-workout recovery, thinking they just help rebuild muscle and reduce soreness. But I've seen a few guys at my gym sipping on EAA drinks *during* their workouts, claiming it gives them an energy boost.

Is there any truth to this? Like, do EAAs provide a usable energy source during intense training, or is it more of a placebo effect? I usually just stick to water or maybe a bit of dextrose if I'm doing a really long session.

If they *do* help with intra-workout energy or endurance, what kind of dosage are we talking about, and is there a specific blend that's better for that purpose? I'm curious to know if I should be incorporating them differently for performance benefits beyond just recovery.

Yeah, EAAs are definitely more than just recovery! I sip on them intra-workout, especially for longer sessions or when I'm cutting. Keeps the energy up and helps prevent muscle breakdown. It's not a stimulant like caffeine, but it definitely makes a difference in endurance for me. 💪

@jimmywells1988, I totally agree! It's not a jolt like pre-workout, but that sustained feeling and knowing you're protecting your muscles is super valuable. I noticed a big difference on leg days when I started using them intra-workout. Less fatigue mid-set. 🔥

I've tried both. For me, BCAAs during a workout feel a bit more direct for energy/staving off fatigue, but EAAs make sense if you're truly fasted or going really long. Recovery-wise, EAAs are king, no doubt. But for energy? I'd say it's more about preventing *loss* of energy than giving a boost. 🤔

@Alexandoy, I think you hit the nail on the head. It's about preventing breakdown and maintaining performance, not a burst of energy. Like a safety net for your muscles when they're under stress. BCAA vs EAA is a whole other debate though! 😅

@AnimalLifter, exactly! It's less about a 'boost' and more about preventing the 'crash'. I find it helps me maintain intensity towards the end of my workouts when I'd usually start dragging. No stims, just muscle support. 💪

Just to throw it out there, a good diet with sufficient protein usually covers your EAA needs. Unless you're in a massive deficit or training like a pro, the extra EAA might be overkill. Most studies show marginal benefits for energy beyond adequate protein intake. Save your money! 💸

@philosopher, I see your point about adequate protein. But for those of us on intermittent fasting or with high training volume, EAAs can be a real game-changer without adding significant calories. It's about timing and specific goals, not just overall intake. Plus, they taste great. 😋

I'm a believer in intraworkout nutrition, and EAAs fit right in. Not strictly for 'energy' in the same way carbs are, but they definitely help with protein synthesis and can reduce perceived exertion. Essential for hard training! 💯

My coach recommends EAAs pre-workout if I'm doing morning fasted cardio or lifting. Says it primes the muscles and prevents catabolism. For energy, I rely on my pre-workout mix, but for keeping strength throughout, EAAs help. Just my two cents. 🤷‍♂️

@CoachCelestine, fasted training is where EAAs really shine for this purpose. You're giving your body the building blocks it needs without breaking your fast or adding calories. Makes sense why your coach recommends it. Good tip! 👍

@Droz, exactly! It's about protecting muscle in those specific scenarios. I'm not chugging them with my morning coffee, but for a solid fast, they're essential. 💯

I cycle my EAA use. On heavy training days or when I'm trying to push new limits, I'll use them intra. On lighter days, just post-workout. I do feel a noticeable difference in recovery and overall less muscle fatigue. For 'energy' it's subtle, but it's there. 📈

Honestly, I think a lot of the 'energy' people feel from EAAs is placebo or just being properly hydrated since they're mixing it in water. Stick to carbs for actual workout energy and protein for recovery. Simpler, cheaper, effective. 🤷‍♀️

@Zigurd, while hydration is key, dismissing EAAs as just placebo might be a bit strong. There's science behind amino acid availability during strenuous exercise preventing fatigue markers. It's not just water, though that helps! 🤓

I've noticed a huge drop in DOMS when I use EAAs, especially on leg days. That alone gives me more 'energy' for subsequent workouts because I'm not hobbling around! So indirectly, yes, they help with workout energy by speeding up recovery. It's all connected. 🤯

I'm a fan of drinking them during my workout. It's like my secret weapon for pushing through that last set when I'm feeling drained. Not a stimulant buzz, but a definite feeling of sustained effort. Give it a try! 🚀

@SweatLovin, 'sustained effort' is the perfect way to describe it! It's not a pre-workout kick, but it definitely helps you grind when you normally would start fading. Especially good for high volume days. 💪🔥

I usually mix a scoop into my water bottle along with some electrolytes. I feel like it helps me stay focused and prevents that mid-workout slump. Plus, the flavor helps me drink more water, which is always good. Double win! 💧
