I just bought a tub of protein from a third party seller on Amazon and the seal looked a bit dodgy. The powder also has a different texture than what I am used to. I am worried that I might have bought a counterfeit product. It is so hard to tell these days with how good the packaging looks.

What are the red flags I should be looking for when buying supplements online? I am in the UK and I usually try to buy directly from the manufacturer but sometimes the deals on other sites are too good to pass up. I have heard that some people find literal flour or sugar in fake tubs.

Do you have any tips for verifying the authenticity of a product? I am thinking about reaching out to the brand with the batch number. I would love to hear if anyone else has been burned by a fake supplement and how you handled it.

Check the lot number on the bottom of the tub. Most legit brands like ON or MyProtein have a verification site where you can type that code in to see if it is a real batch. If it is missing or looks wiped off send it back immediately.

I had a similar issue with a "flat" I was staying at in Manchester last month. Ordered some Whey off a random site and the label had spelling mistakes. It said "Proten" instead of "Protein". Dead giveaway right there.

Always look at the seal under the cap. If it is a cardboard-like material that is just sitting there loosely it is probably a fake. Real ones are induction-sealed and hard to peel off without leaving some residue on the rim.

Wait are we talking about the clear plastic wrap on the outside or the seal inside the lid? I just bought some from a shop in Dallas and the outside wrap was missing.

Both matter. Usually reputable brands have a branded neck sleeve. If it is just generic clear shrink wrap be suspicious. I tell my clients to only buy direct from the manufacturer official Amazon store not just ""Fulfilled by Amazon"" sellers.

The smell is usually the biggest tell for me. If your vanilla protein smells like chemical floor cleaner or chalk don't drink it. Proper whey has a distinct milky scent even when flavoured.

Does anyone know if the holographic stickers are still a thing? I remember some brands used them to prevent fakes but I have not seen them on my recent tubs.

Some brands still use them here in Canada but fakers have gotten really good at mimicking holograms. It is better to check the scoop. Genuine brands usually have a very specific scoop shape and colour. If the scoop in your new tub looks different from the last one start asking questions.

I did a water test once. Someone told me fake protein does not clump or dissolve the same way. Is that actually a thing or just bro-science?

It is mostly bro-science. Different filtration methods change the solubility anyway. You cannot really tell the protein content just by mixing it in a shaker.

I just check the price. if a 5lb tub is 30 dollars cheaper than everywhere else it is a fake. No one is giving away protein at a loss in this economy.

Exactly. If it is too good to be true it is. I stick to the big box retailers or the official sites. Dealing with a dodgy stomach from fake powder is not worth saving twenty quid.

Has anyone noticed the tubs themselves? Sometimes the plastic on the fakes feels thinner or the moulding on the bottom is not as clean as the originals.

Yeah the ""seam"" on the side of the tub is a big one. On the high-end stuff it is almost invisible. On the cheap fakes I have seen in some shops the seam is rough and sharp.

I found a bag of "Creatine" last week that was actually just cornstarch. It did not have that slightly crystalline texture. Be careful out there guys.

Cornstarch is a classic filler. Another thing to watch for is the expiration date font. If it looks like it was stamped on with a cheap office stamper rather than laser-printed it is a red flag.

Just checked my current tub after reading this. It has a QR code that takes me to a verification page. Is that reliable or can they fake the QR too?

They can fake the QR code to point to a fake website that looks like the official one. Always check the URL in your browser after you scan it.

I do not trust Amazon third-party sellers at all. I have had two instances where the product was clearly tampered with. One had a different colored powder inside.
