How to Use Lavender and Chamomile for Better Gym Performance
I am looking for a more natural approach to my recovery and I am wondering how to use lavender and chamomile for better gym performance. I know these are usually seen as simple tea ingredients but I am curious if they can be used more strategically to lower stress and improve sleep quality.
I am in the US and I have been using a lavender essential oil diffuser in my bedroom at night. I am also drinking two cups of strong chamomile tea before bed. I want to know if these natural sedatives can actually lead to better strength and muscle gains by improving the quality of my rest.
Do you guys use any aromatherapy or herbal teas as part of your recovery protocol? I am interested in any science that shows a link between these relaxing herbs and actual athletic performance. I would love to hear your favorite ways to use them in your daily life!
Interesting angle, Hannah! I’ve actually been using lavender oil on my pillow for a few months. It doesn't directly build muscle, obviously, but the improved deep sleep means I’m far less groggy for my 6am sessions. If you’re better rested, your performance goes up—simple as that.
I’m a bit skeptical about the 'gym performance' part. I mean, chamomile is what my grandma drinks to fall asleep during the football game. Won't it just make you sluggish if you use it too close to a workout?
@TXguy99 the trick is using it for recovery, not as a pre-workout! I drink a strong chamomile tea after my evening hockey games. It helps lower the cortisol levels that stay spiked after high-intensity cardio, which is the real 'performance' hack.
Spot on, MapleLeaf. Over here in the UK, we're quite big on herbal infusions. I find that a lavender-infused bath with Epsom salts is the ultimate post-leg-day ritual. The lavender relaxes the nervous system while the magnesium in the salts handles the muscles.
I've been looking into this myself and honestly the options are overwhelming. Has anyone tried the oral lavender capsules (like Silexan)? I've heard they are more effective than just smelling the oil for anxiety and recovery.
Thanks for the replies! MidwestMike, I’ve tried the capsules and they definitely help with 'gym anxiety' if you’re trying a new PR or heading into a crowded squat rack. They don't make me sleepy, just... level.
Totally agree with HerbalHannah. One thing I would add though is make sure you do your research on the source. A lot of the cheap lavender oils are just synthetic fragrance which won't do anything for your nervous system.
I use a chamomile extract in my intra-workout drink sometimes—very low dose. It sounds weird, but it helps keep my heart rate from spiking too high when I'm doing high-rep supersets. Just a Canadian lad trying to stay chill in the gym!
Intra-workout chamomile? That’s a new one for me, Dave! Does it not affect your explosive power at all?
Not that I’ve noticed. It’s more about that mental 'flow state'. If I'm too hyped on caffeine, I lose my form. The chamomile just rounds off the edges of the stims.
I prefer keeping the herbs for the 'wind-down' phase. If I train late in my local gym, I can’t sleep for hours. A double-bagged chamomile tea with a drop of honey is my go-to once I get back to my flat.
I guess it’s cheaper than a $60 bottle of ZMA. Might give the tea a shot tonight after my heavy rucking session.
Does anyone find that lavender gives them weird dreams? I used a diffuser last night and I was dreaming about lifting weights in a grocery store. Super vivid.
Vivid dreams usually mean you’re getting more REM sleep, Mike. That’s a win for cognitive recovery!
Has anyone tried combining them with Ashwagandha? I’m thinking about a 'super-natural' recovery stack.
I do! I take Ashwagandha in the morning and the lavender/chamomile combo at night. It definitely helps manage the stress of work and training. In the winter here, when it's dark at 4pm, it really helps the mood too.
I’ve heard that lavender can actually have a mild effect on oestrogen levels in men if overused. Anyone know if there's any truth to that? Don't want to mess up the gains.
That study was pretty flawed and mostly related to topical application in prepubescent boys. For an adult male lifter, a bit of aromatherapy or a cup of tea isn't going to kill your testosterone. Don't worry about it.
Good to know. I was about to throw my tea bag out lol.
