READ FIRST: The Essential Beginner Guide to Gym Equipment
I tried the cable machine today! I did some lat pulldowns. I felt like I was finally doing 'real' gym stuff haha.
Nice one, Mike! Lat pulldowns are the foundation for getting that first pull-up eventually.
Quick tip: If you aren't sure how a machine works, most of them have a little diagram on the side showing the start and finish positions. Don't be afraid to stand there and read it for a second.
Also, don't be afraid to ask a member of staff! That’s what they’re there for. They’d rather show you how to use it than have you break the machine or yourself.
What about belts? I see beginners wearing lifting belts for every single exercise, even curls. Is that necessary?
Heck no. You don't need a belt until you're moving some seriously heavy weight on squats or deadlifts. Beginners should focus on building core strength naturally first.
Exactly. A belt is a tool to push against, not a corset for your lower back.
This has been so helpful. I’m going back tomorrow and I’m actually going to try the dumbbells for some chest presses. Thanks everyone!
Go get it, Mike! Keep us posted on the progress.
Best of luck! Remember: everyone in there is too busy looking at themselves in the mirror to worry about what you're doing.
Solid advice from Dave. The mirror is a tool for form, not a stage for judgment. Mike, when you hit those dumbbells, focus on the 'squeeze' at the top of the chest press. Don't worry about the weight yet.
Quick question for the group - the guide mentions 'resistance machines' as a starting point. Are those better than the cables for a total novice? My local leisure centre in Leeds has a massive row of them but they look like torture devices haha!
Machines are great because they have a fixed path of motion. Cables require more stability. Start with the machines to build that base strength, then move to cables once you feel more confident.
Thanks Arnold! I'll stick to the chest press machine for one more week then. And thanks Celestine, I'll definitely focus on the squeeze. Honestly, just finding the lockers was a win today.
I've been reading this thread for days and finally worked up the courage to go. The 'Guide' says to bring a towel—is that a strict rule? I'm in a small flat in London and hate doing extra laundry if I can help it.
Lurkers, definitely bring a towel, buddy. It's more about gym etiquette than anything. Nobody wants to sit in someone else's sweat. Plus, most gyms here in Canada will actually flag you if you don't have one.
Trainers are fine for 90% of beginners. Just avoid those super squishy running shoes if you're doing squats; it's like trying to lift while standing on a marshmallow. Flat soles are king.
Just read the part about the Smith Machine. My gym only has one power rack and it's always busy with guys doing curls (infuriating lol). Is the Smith Machine a decent substitute for squats while I wait?
It's better than doing nothing, Joey, but the mechanics are different. If the rack is busy, try Goblet Squats with a dumbbell instead. Much more natural movement than being locked into the Smith Machine track.
