The Truth About Proprietary Blends in Pre Workout Supplements
I am sick of seeing proprietary blends on the back of my pre workout tubs. I want to know exactly how much of each ingredient I am paying for. I am in the UK and I am trying to avoid brands that use these blends to hide their dosages. I think it is time for more transparency in the industry.
Why do companies still use these blends? They claim it is to protect their secret formulas but I suspect it is just to save money on expensive ingredients. I am looking for a discussion on which brands are the best for full label transparency. I want to be able to trust what I am putting in my body.
Do you refuse to buy products with proprietary blends? I have started only buying from companies that disclose every single milligram. I would love to hear your thoughts on this and if you think it is a major issue in the supplement world. Let s demand better from these brands!
I totally agree with TruthTeller. It is infuriating to spend good money on a pre workout and then have no clue if you are getting efficacious doses of key ingredients. Transparency should be standard, not a luxury. πͺ
You are spot on! I have been burned by proprietary blends too many times. There are a few brands out there that do list everything, you just have to search for them. Usually the smaller, more reputable ones. Look for labels that say "fully disclosed formula" or something similar. π
@Droz, exactly! It is a trust issue. If a company is hiding something, it usually means they are cutting corners on ingredient amounts to save money. We deserve to know what we are putting into our bodies. π€
The reason they use proprietary blends is often twofold: to hide underdosed ingredients and to prevent competitors from copying their "secret formula." But let us be real, most ingredients are common knowledge anyway. It is mostly about saving money on fillers. π€·ββοΈ
@UKLifterLiam, I would appreciate it if you could share some of those brand names you trust! It is hard to sift through all the marketing hype. Any specific ones that ship to the UK or are available there? π
I feel completely ripped off when I see a blend. Like, I bought this for the creatine and beta-alanine, but how much am I actually getting? 100mg? 1g? It is a gamble every time. π²
@PreWorkoutPro, that is the harsh truth right there. It is misleading for consumers. They might put a tiny amount of an expensive ingredient just to list it on the label, and then fill the rest with cheap stuff like taurine. Not cool. π
Honestly, I just started making my own pre workout. Bought bulk creatine, beta-alanine, L-citrulline, and caffeine anhydrous. You know exactly what you are getting, and it is way cheaper in the long run. Plus, no weird additives. Highly recommend! π
@JayneScott, for transparent formulas, check out brands like Myprotein (UK based, often on sale), Bulk Powders, or even some of the more premium US brands like Transparent Labs if you do not mind the shipping. They list everything clearly. Hope that helps! π
It also makes managing caffeine tolerance a nightmare. One scoop could be 150mg or 300mg, who knows? Then you are overstimulated or underwhelmed. Such a pain. π€―
@StrengthSeeker, that sounds interesting! Where do you usually source your bulk ingredients from to ensure quality and purity? I have considered doing that but am a bit hesitant about finding reliable suppliers. π€
I had a terrible experience once. Took a proprietary blend, felt fine, then took it again the next day and had crazy jitters and stomach issues. Realized later the caffeine must have been wildly inconsistent. Never again. π«
@MuscleMeccaCrew, thank you so much for those recommendations! I will definitely look into them. Do you have any specific thoughts on the dosages of common ingredients like creatine monohydrate or beta-alanine in those transparent formulas? Are they usually sufficient? π
It is also shocking that there is not more regulation around this. They can essentially put anything in there and just call it a "muscle matrix" or "energy blend" without specifics. Consumers are left in the dark. π‘
@GymBroGus, I totally get that! My caffeine tolerance can fluctuate, and with a proprietary blend, it is impossible to adjust. One time I got the shakes so bad I thought I was going to pass out. Not worth it. π©
The best advice I can give is to always look for the phrase "fully disclosed formula" or "transparent label." If they are proud of their ingredients and their dosing, they will show you. If they hide it, walk away. Simple as that. πΆββοΈ
@PrinceVegeta, I have had good experiences with BulkSupplements and NutriCost for quality and price, especially here in the US. I hear Myprotein also does a good job with bulk ingredients in the UK. Just do a little research on third-party testing if you are unsure about a new supplier. π§ͺ
If a company truly believes they have a superior ingredient matrix, why would they keep it a secret? It makes no sense unless they have something to hide. It is predatory marketing in my opinion. π€
@A4tech, usually yes, the transparent brands aim for clinical dosages. For creatine, you are looking for 3-5g daily, and for beta-alanine, around 3.2g. Many of the good transparent pre-workouts will hit these marks per serving. Always check the specific label though! β¨
