Hey everyone! I'm just starting my fitness journey and looking for a workout buddy in the Vancouver area. I'm mainly looking at hitting the community centers or maybe some light seawall jogs once the rain lets up. Complete beginner here, so no pressure if you're just starting out too!

I might be interested! Which part of the city are you in? I'm over near Mount Pleasant and usually use the Hillcrest center. It's a bit intimidating going to the weight room alone for the first time.

Hillcrest is great! I'm actually in Kitsilano but I don't mind the commute. Having someone to spot or just keep me accountable would be huge. Have you looked at any specific beginner programs yet?

Just popping in from Toronto to say good luck! I found my gym partner on a forum like this three years ago and it completely changed my consistency. Vancouver seawall runs are legendary, wish I was there for them!

I'm in the West End and looking for the same thing. I've been doing some 'couch to 5k' stuff but I really want to start some basic full-body lifting. Anyone tried the YMCA on Burrard?

The Burrard Y is decent mate. I spent a summer in Van a few years back and used that gym. Very welcoming for beginners, not too many "gym bros" throwing weights around.

Man, I wish I could join you guys. In Chicago it's currently -10 and I'm stuck on a treadmill in my basement. Hope you find a solid crew!

WestEndWill, I've heard the YMCA is great but it's a bit of a trek for me. Dave, I was looking at the "Starting Strength" program but it looks a bit heavy on the squats. Maybe we could start with the subforum's basic full-body guide?

That sounds perfect. The guide here looks way less scary. I'm free Tuesday and Thursday evenings after 6 PM. Does that work for you or Will?

Thursdays work for me! I could probably meet halfway between Kits and West End. Maybe the gym at the West End Community Centre?

Hi from the UK! Just a tip for you lot—don't forget to check if your community centres have an orientation session. Most do them for free and they show you how to use the machines so you don't look like a total lemon on your first day!

Lol @ NorthernLass, definitely don't want to look like a lemon! That's a great tip though, I'll check the website tonight.

Tuesday/Thursday works for me too! Shall we try to coordinate a group chat? It's easier than checking the forum every hour. Also, is anyone else worried about the 'lunk' vibe or are Vancouver gyms pretty chill?

In my experience, everyone in Van is too busy staring at their own reflection or their phone to judge you. It's actually quite liberating!

So true Dave. I'm down for a group chat. Just sent you a DM with my info. If anyone else wants in, let us know.

Wait, am I too late? I'm in North Van but I work downtown near the Waterfront. I've been terrified of the gym for years but I really need to get moving. Can I join the 'beginner squad'?

Absolutely CanuckCathy! The more the merrier. Safety in numbers, right? I'll add you to our list. We're looking at doing a first "orientation" meet-up next Thursday.

This is awesome. Went from 0 to 4 people in a day. Can't wait to actually start instead of just talking about it!
