Is cycling really as good as running for overall cardio fitness?

Hey team, I'm trying to diversify my cardio a bit. I've always been a runner, but the constant impact is starting to get to my knees a bit, especially on longer sessions. I'm thinking about incorporating more cycling, either on a road bike or even just a spin class.

My main goal is to maintain and improve my overall cardiovascular fitness and endurance. I know both are great, but I'm curious if cycling can truly deliver the same kind of aerobic benefits as running. Obviously, it's lower impact, which is a huge plus, but does it work the heart and lungs in the same way?

Anyone here transitioned from mostly running to mostly cycling, or who does a good mix of both? What were your experiences? Did you notice any drop-off in your running performance if you swapped it for cycling, or does the cardio carry over well? I'm particularly interested in opinions on how effective cycling is for pure stamina and V02 max improvements compared to pounding the pavement.

Absolutely! Cycling is fantastic for cardio and much easier on the joints. I swapped out a couple of my weekly runs for long bike rides and my knees have never felt better. You can still get your heart rate up just as high.

@Alexandoy, totally agree on the joint relief! My shins used to scream after a long run, but cycling lets me push my endurance without that constant pounding. It's been a game-changer for staying consistent.

It really depends on what you're trying to achieve beyond just cardio. Running uses different muscle groups more dynamically, especially your hamstrings and calves, and also has a greater impact on bone density. Cycling works your quads and glutes like crazy though! Both are great, but for different full-body engagement.

Why not both? Cross-training is the ultimate win-win. Keep some running for the unique benefits, but bring in cycling to give your body a break and work those different muscles. Variety keeps things fresh too! 💪
