How to Use Kinesiology Tape for Knee Support and Stability
I see a lot of athletes wearing colorful tape on their knees and I am wondering if it actually does anything or if it is just a placebo. I have some mild instability in my right knee after a ligament strain and I am considering trying some KT tape for my next workout.
Does the application method really matter or can I just slap it on? I have seen some tutorials online but they all seem to have different techniques for different issues. I am specifically looking for support during squats and lunges.
If you have used kinesiology tape did you find it actually helped with the pain or stability? I am a bit skeptical but if it can provide even a small benefit I am willing to give it a shot. Please let me know which brand you recommend as well.
I used to be a skeptic, JerseyJoe, but my physio in Vancouver started using it for my patellar tendonitis. It doesn't "support" the joint like a rigid brace does, but it provides proprioceptive feedback. Basically, it helps your brain stay aware of your knee position, which is huge when you're doing heavy squats or lunges.
Spot on, Dave. It’s all about that lift on the skin. I find that when I tape my knee properly, the swelling goes down much faster after a long session. It’s like it creates a bit of space for the lymphatic system to do its job.
I’ve tried it and honestly? I think it’s mostly psychological. If I wrap my knee in bright neon tape, I feel like an athlete and maybe I push a bit harder. But as far as actual stability for a torn ligament? No way. You need a real brace for that down here.
It’s definitely not a replacement for a brace if you’ve got a serious injury, but for general stability, it’s grand. Does anyone have tips on getting it to actually stay on? Mine always peels off the minute I start sweating or if I’m out in the rain in Yorkshire.
NorthernLass, the trick is cleaning the skin with rubbing alcohol first. Also, make sure you round the corners of the tape with scissors before applying. If the corners are sharp, they catch on your leggings or trousers and peel right up.
Totally agree with the rounded corners! Also, don't put any stretch on the 'anchors' (the last inch on each end). If you stretch the ends, the tape will pull against your skin and cause blisters or just pop off.
I have been looking into this myself and honestly the options are overwhelming. Has anyone had hands-on experience with the newer models? Would love to hear what actually works in practice. My local CVS has about five different brands and I don't want to waste money.
MidwestMike, I’ve tried the cheap supermarket brands and the premium ones like KT Tape or RockTape. The premium ones definitely have better adhesive. If you’re doing high-intensity lifting or cardio, the extra five quid is worth it so it doesn't end up as a sticky mess in your sock.
Does the colour actually mean anything? I see some people saying the black tape is stronger than the pink or blue ones.
Complete myth! The colours are just for aesthetics. Some brands might have a "pro" version in black that is stickier, but usually, it's just so you can match your gym kit.
What’s the best pattern for general knee pain? I see some people doing an 'X' over the kneecap and others doing two long strips on the sides.
For stability, I like the 'Y' strip. You anchor it on the quad and then split the tape to go around the patella. It helps track the kneecap properly. There are some great tutorials on YouTube that show the specific tension you need.
I prefer the 'U' shape around the bottom of the kneecap. It feels like it’s giving my patella a little hug. Very helpful when I’m walking down stairs, which is usually when my knee feels most 'dodgy'.
One thing nobody mentions—shave your legs! If you have hair under that tape, taking it off is a form of torture. I learned that the hard way after a leg day in London.
Haha, thanks for the warning, LondonLad. I'll keep the razor handy. How long do you guys usually leave the tape on? Is it a one-workout thing or can it stay on for days?
You can leave it on for 3-5 days usually. It’s waterproof, so you can shower with it. Just pat it dry with a towel—don't rub it or you'll peel the edges.
I find that by day 3 it starts to get a bit itchy. If your skin is sensitive, definitely don't push it past 48 hours.
If it gets itchy, take it off immediately. I had a buddy get a nasty rash because he ignored the itch. Some of the adhesives are pretty harsh.
True. I always do a small 'test patch' on my arm before putting a full pattern on my knee. Better safe than sorry!
