I am looking for a slow digesting protein to take before bed to help with recovery during my hockey season. I am currently debating between a pure micellar casein and a milk protein concentrate blend. I have heard that casein forms a gel in the stomach which provides a steady stream of amino acids.

Is there a big difference in how they feel? I tried one brand of casein and it was so thick it was like eating pudding. I am not sure if I can do that every night. I am looking for something that is smooth but still effective for preventing muscle breakdown while I sleep.

Does anyone have a favorite nighttime protein that does not clump up? I am shopping in Toronto so I can get most major brands. I would love to hear your thoughts on whether the price jump for pure micellar casein is worth the result.

Micellar Casein is the gold standard for nighttime because it clots in the stomach for a 7-8 hour release. Milk Protein Concentrate (MPC) is actually 80% casein and 20% whey so it is a bit of a hybrid. For a long hockey season the pure casein might be better for that sustained drip of aminos.

I have used both and honestly MPC tastes much better and mixes way easier in a shaker. Pure casein can turn into a thick sludge if you do not get the water ratio perfect. If you are in a flat with a small kitchen and no blender MPC is just easier.

LondonLad has a point about the texture but we are talking about recovery here. The 20% whey in MPC gives you a quick spike which you might not actually want right before sleeping. I prefer the slow steady release of micellar isolate to keep protein synthesis elevated until breakfast.

Does MPC cause the same bloat as regular milk? I am trying to lean out for a competition in Dallas and do not want to wake up looking like a water balloon.

TXguy99 it depends on the filtration. Some MPCs have more lactose than micellar casein isolate. If you are sensitive to dairy sugars look for a high-grade micellar casein to avoid that morning bloat.

I actually prefer making ""protein pudding"" with micellar casein. Just a little bit of water and it is basically a dessert. Helps with the late night cravings here in Chicago.

Pudding is the way to go! MPC does not thicken up the same way so it stays pretty watery. If you want that thick texture micellar is the winner.

Keep in mind that MPC is usually significantly cheaper than pure micellar casein. If you are on a budget and still getting 80 percent casein from the MPC it is a very cost-effective way to handle nighttime recovery.

Price is key for me in Vancouver. I find MPC works just fine for my recovery after late night beer league games. I have not noticed a massive difference in muscle soreness compared to the expensive casein.

Recovery is about the total day. If your macros are hit it really does not matter which one you choose. I personally use cottage cheese which is basically natural casein and way cheaper than any powder.

Cottage cheese is alright but it is a bit heavy right before bed. I like a light shake so I don't feel like I am sleeping on a brick. I use a UK brand of MPC and it is spot on for the price.

As I get older I find the slow release helps with my morning stiffness. I stick to the pure micellar. It is worth the extra few quid to know I am getting the slowest digestion possible.

Does anyone know if MPC has a higher calcium content than micellar casein? I heard that can help with sleep quality too.

Usually they are pretty similar in calcium. The main difference is just that 20 percent whey portion in the MPC. If you have a hockey game late at night like MapleLeafFan you might actually benefit from that bit of whey for immediate recovery then the casein for the rest of the night.

I have been using MPC for 6 months and my recovery is great. I think the hybrid nature is actually better because you get the best of both worlds.

MPC is basically what you get if you just drink milk but without the extra water and carbs. Micellar is more processed to remove everything else. I prefer the less processed stuff.

Totally agree Arvin! Keep it simple. No need to overcomplicate things with super expensive isolates unless you are a pro bodybuilder.

I just want something that does not taste like chalk. Every casein I have tried is so gritty. Is MPC smoother?

SweatLovin MPC is definitely smoother because of the whey content. It behaves much more like a standard protein shake. Pure micellar is always going to have a bit of that graininess due to the molecular structure.
