I have set a timer on my phone to limit my social media use to thirty minutes a day. I realized that the more time I spent on TikTok, the worse I felt about myself. Since cutting back, my self esteem has improved significantly. I am spending more time reading and being outside in Seattle, which has been great for my mental health.

It is amazing how much our environment influences our thoughts. When I am not constantly seeing curated versions of other people lives, I am much happier with my own. I am also being very selective about who I follow and I am not afraid to hit the unfollow button if someone makes me feel inadequate.

Do you have any strategies for managing your digital consumption? I think it is one of the most important things we can do for our body image in this day and age. I would love to hear your tips for staying offline and focused on the real world.

That is a proper good start, SeattleSam. I did the same thing last month and noticed my mood improved almost immediately. It is mental how much we compare our real lives to someone else's highlight reel without even realising it.

I have been looking into this myself and honestly the options for overwhelming. I tried the timer thing but I just kept hitting "ignore limit" whenever a cool gym reel popped up. Does anyone have advice for actually sticking to the boundaries?

Totally agree with Mike. The 'ignore limit' button is way too tempting. I had to actually move the apps off my home screen and into a folder on the last page of my phone. The extra three seconds it takes to find them gives my brain enough time to ask if I really need to be scrolling right now.

I’ve gone one step further and just deleted the apps from my mobile entirely. If I want to check Instagram, I have to log in on my laptop in my flat. It sounds extreme but it stopped the mindless scrolling while I’m waiting for the bus in Leeds.

NorthernLass is onto something. The 'friction' is key. I also did a massive unfollow spree last weekend. If an account made me feel like my physique wasn't good enough or my life was boring, I hit unfollow. It doesn't matter how 'inspirational' they claim to be.

Unfollowing is the way to go. I realized half the people I followed in Texas were just trying to sell me supplements by making me feel small. Now I only follow accounts that post actual science-based training tips or funny cat videos. My self-esteem is much better for it.

Totally agree! The 'mute' button is also your friend if you don't want the awkwardness of unfollowing friends or family. Sometimes I just don't want to see my cousin's 'perfect' fitness journey when I'm struggling with a plateau.

Has anyone tried a 'Social Media Sabbath'? I’ve started turning my phone off entirely on Sundays. It felt weird at first, like I was missing out on something, but now it’s my favourite day of the week. No comparisons, just vibes.

LondonLad, I love that idea! Sundays are usually when I spend the most time scrolling because I'm prepping for the week. Turning the phone off might actually help with my Sunday Scaries too.

I worry that if I go 'dark' on social media, I'll lose touch with the fitness community. It’s where I get most of my motivation for my home gym workouts. How do you balance that?

Mike, maybe try curated newsletters or forums like this one instead? Social media is designed to keep you addicted with algorithms; forums are more intentional. You still get the community without the endless, mindless feed.

Exactly. And remember that motivation should ideally come from within, not from seeing a stranger in California do a muscle-up. Use social media as a tool, not a crutch.

I’ve also found that greyscale mode on the iPhone helps. It makes the apps look dull and unappealing. You'd be surprised how much of the 'addiction' is just the bright colours and flashy notifications.

Greyscale? That's interesting. I might have to try that. Everything in Texas is big and bright, maybe I need a bit of grey in my life lol.

Does anyone else feel guilty when they spend too much time on there? Like, I'll spend an hour scrolling and then feel bad about myself for 'wasting' the time, which just makes the self-esteem dip even worse.

Every single day, mate. It's a vicious cycle. The best way to break it is to replace the habit. I’ve started leaving a book on my bedside table so I grab that instead of my phone in the morning.

Replacing the habit is key. I started doing 10 minutes of mobility work when I feel the urge to check my feed. My hips are finally starting to feel better and I'm less stressed.

Mobility work instead of scrolling? That is genius. I'm stealing that.

Another tip: turn off all notifications. Not just for social media, but for everything. If it's important, they'll call. You'll stop jumping every time your phone buzzes like a Pavlovian dog.
